Machine Performance (Numeric, Gauge, Bar graph, by Product)

Updated 28 days ago

Introduction

The Machine Performance KPIs display, in real time on your dashboard, the value of a performance indicator (OEE, TRG, TRE, or any other indicator you define yourself) for a PERFTRAK machine.

The same indicator can be visualised in four display formats:

  • Numeric — the value displayed as a figure,
  • Gauge — the value positioned on a gauge coloured by thresholds,
  • Bar graph — the evolution of the value over time, bar by bar,
  • By products — the value compared between the references produced on the machine.

The Numeric and Gauge formats also exist in a V2 variant, whose calculation is based on a second-generation performance indicator — see the dedicated section.

Example use cases

Compact tracking of a machine's OEE — A line manager wants to permanently display a machine's OEE as a figure readable from a distance. They choose the Numeric format.

Visual steering by thresholds — A workshop manager wants to see at a glance whether a machine is in the green, orange or red. They choose the Gauge format and define their Low / Average / High thresholds.

Trend analysis — A manager wants to follow the evolution of performance over the past month to spot underperforming days. They choose the Bar graph format, which shows one bar per day.

Comparing products — A production manager wants to know which reference gives the best output on a given machine. They choose the By products format, which shows one bar per product.

Tracking a custom business indicator — A quality engineer creates a "scrap rate" indicator and displays it as a gauge, to raise an alert as soon as the critical threshold is crossed.

Prerequisite — Configure a performance indicator

These KPIs all rely on a performance indicator, which must be configured beforehand.

  1. Go to Setup > Performance Indicators.
  2. Click Add, then name your indicator.
  3. Select the losses for the numerator and for the denominator matching the calculation you want. Example: losses associated with quality / (losses associated with quality + normal production time), to obtain a scrap rate.
  4. Define the perimeter it applies to: the factory or factories and the workshop or workshops concerned. (In the example, the scrap rate is applied to all factories.)

Once created, the indicator becomes selectable in the Performance indicator field of your Machine Performance KPIs.

Without a performance indicator configured within the machine's perimeter, the KPI cannot display a result.

Creating a Machine Performance KPI — common steps

The configuration is almost identical for the four formats; only a few options change, detailed further down.

Step 1 — Create the KPI

From your dashboard, click Add New KPI, select PERFTRAK machine, then the type you want: Machine performance (Numeric), Machine performance (Gauge), Machine performance (Bar graph) or Performance by products — or one of the V2 variants.

Step 2 — Enter the name

In Name, enter the title of the KPI as it will appear on the dashboard.

Step 3 — Select the machine

In Machine, choose the reference machine.

Step 4 — Choose the interval

In Interval, select the calculation period (for example Last hour, Last 31 days).

Step 5 — Choose the performance indicator

In Performance indicator, select the indicator you configured beforehand. The list only shows the indicators whose perimeter includes the selected machine.

Specifics of each display type

Numeric type

The Numeric format simply displays the indicator's value as a figure. One additional option:

  • Number of decimals: choose 0, 1 or 2 decimals for the displayed value.

Gauge type

The Gauge format positions the value on a coloured gauge. Additional options:

  • Number of decimals: 0, 1 or 2.
  • Use OEE per product: bases the performance calculation on the theoretical pace specific to each product manufactured, rather than on a single machine-level pace.
  • Display machine status: adds a coloured border to the widget, reflecting the current status of the machine in real time (stopped, slowed down, running).
  • Status: using the 0% – 100% slider, split the result into three ranges, whose colours you can customise by clicking the coloured frames:
    • Low — 0% to 60% by default (red),
    • Average — 60% to 80% by default (yellow),
    • High — 80% to 100% by default (green).

Bar graph type

The Bar graph format shows the evolution of the indicator over time, one bar per period. It offers the same options as the gauge (Use OEE per product, Display machine status, Low / Average / High thresholds with customisable colours), which colour each bar according to its value.

Its particularity is its automatic granularity: to stay readable, the bar graph adapts its display step to the chosen interval.

  • A monthly interval → displayed week by week,
  • a weekly interval → displayed day by day, and so on.

By products type

The By products format breaks performance down reference by reference: it displays a vertical bar chart, one bar per product manufactured over the interval, which makes it possible to directly compare the output of the different products on a same machine. Additional option:

  • Use production orders: when this box is ticked, the KPI breaks performance down by production order rather than by product reference. The production orders must have been configured beforehand.

The V2 variants

The Numeric and Gauge formats exist in a V2 version. The V2 label means that the calculation is based on a V2 performance indicator (second generation). In practice, the configuration is identical, with one difference: the field is called V2 performance indicator and offers the V2 indicators configured at loss tree level.

Reading the KPI

Numeric — The indicator's value is displayed as a figure, with the chosen number of decimals.

Gauge — The value is positioned on a gauge whose colour (red / yellow / green, or your custom colours) depends on the range reached. If the option is enabled, a border shows the real-time status of the machine.

Bar graph — Each bar represents a period (day, week) and its colour reflects the indicator's value over that period. Hovering over a bar shows the exact value and the date; a dotted line marks the average over the whole period.

By products — The KPI is displayed as vertical bars: the horizontal axis lists the product references (or the production orders if the option is enabled), the vertical axis the indicator's value. Each bar shows the percentage and the product name.

The mention "Waiting for data" may appear on a bar if the data needed for the calculation is not yet complete for a product.

Edge cases and points to watch

Performance indicator not configured. Without an indicator created beforehand in Setup > Performance Indicators, the drop-down list is empty and the KPI cannot be created.

Perimeter of the indicator. The performance indicator must include, in its perimeter, the factory and/or the workshop of the selected machine. Otherwise, the KPI will not return any data.

Machine outside your perimeter. Only the PERFTRAK machines included in your perimeter are offered. If a machine is missing, check your rights with your administrator.

V2 variants. A V2 KPI requires a V2 performance indicator to have been configured at loss tree level; failing that, the corresponding field stays empty.

Bar graph granularity cannot be set. The display step of the bar graph is determined automatically by the interval; it cannot be set manually. To change the granularity, change the interval.

Production orders not configured. For the By products format, if you tick "Use production orders" without having configured any beforehand, the KPI cannot display a usable result.

No data over the interval. If no production took place over the period, the value displayed is empty — or the bars of the bar graph / by products view are empty or show "Waiting for data".

FAQ

What is the difference between the Numeric, Gauge, Bar graph and By products formats? They rely on the same indicator but present it differently: the Numeric gives the raw value, the Gauge situates it against colour thresholds, the Bar graph shows its evolution over time, and the By products view compares it between the references manufactured on the machine.

When should I use the By products format? When several references are produced on the same machine and you want to compare their performance, or isolate a problematic product — an abnormally high scrap rate, for instance.

What does the "V2" label mean? The KPI bases its calculation on a V2 performance indicator (second generation) instead of a standard one. Only the Numeric and Gauge formats have a V2 variant.

How do I change the threshold colours (Low / Average / High)? Click the coloured frames next to each status and choose the colour you want from the palette.

What is the "Display machine status" option for? It adds a coloured border to the widget, reflecting the machine's status in real time (stopped, slowed down, running), so you can see it at a glance.

What is "Use OEE per product" for? It adjusts the performance calculation by taking into account the theoretical pace specific to each product.

Can I set the bar graph granularity myself? No: it is derived automatically from the chosen interval (month → week, week → day). Change the interval to vary it.

Can I create several Machine Performance KPIs for the same machine? Yes. You can for instance display the OEE as a gauge and the scrap rate by product on the same machine, to cross-check the analyses.

How often is the KPI updated? It refreshes automatically with the real-time data sent by the machine.
